Some interesting discussions on the SCI forum about the release of new motors with neodymium magnets. MBSlot released a new motor (DODO) and Avant Slot also has such motors. They can pull over 100g of downforce on a Magnet Marshal. Here's a story from one post:
"It's the same concept as the blue can motor from Avant Slot.
The europeans are usually so "no magnets" in all their racing . ..aren't they? so it seems the downforce of these motors is just a wierd anomoly. Yeah, it's a fast motor, but nothing extra-ordinary, except the downforce..... They'll require a separate class of racing called "non-magnet magnet racing" or something . . . . Not sure it's a trend I can get excited about at all...........
Does anyone know what the "fashion" is that is driving this strand of motor development?
As an example
I turned up in Sydney in March to race at a public raceway with fixed house classes/rules, and they are a "no magnet no weight" place. - absolutely . . . . 100% plus. . .
Thought I had a competitive car set up to their rules when I arrived 2 hours early to practice,....but I was a second a lap too slow.... 8 vs. 7 "oh no, you need to break 7 to be competitive . . . . . . . but there's a new motor out that you should use" ....and the guy shows me this 35K Avant Slot motor.
"Gimme the bits I need" I says, "and loan me that Hudy pinion tool, and a soldering iron"
So I set to work fitting it to a FLY BMW M1 in place of the stock 18K motor.
WELL, after 20 odd attempts, I managed to keep the motor under control against the Hudy while I got that pinion mounted. I could not BELIEVE the strength of the magnets. I was on the money for lap times and made the podium, but I used their magnet marshal . . . . 110 grams downforce . . . in "no magnet" racing . . . .
The 4 of us with the blue motor blasted everyone else off the track that evening . . . and I felt like I'd been caught with a Wing car chassis hidden under a stock Scaley body........."
Of course this should not have an effect on taped wood tracks, but would on other tracks. Would it make some sense to have downforce restrictions on classes where motor swaps are allowed? Or will there be an increase in Avant slot blue motor sales?
